We sat down with Crystal Toppin, one of our dental nurses at our London Marylebone Studio to discuss the impact she's having in our client's lives and how working in our studio is paying dividends in her professional life.
Franksmile: So Crystal, why did you decide to work at a Franksmile Studio?
Crystal: Well, I worked as a dental nurse for 3 ½ years in a dental practice where I learned all about dental health and hygiene, as well as the various treatments that patients often undergo. However, sometimes in practices, you feel a bit undervalued because you’re working under medical doctors. I ultimately chose to work at Franksmile to have a closer connection and relationship with the customers and to really use my dental expertise and training even more.
Franksmile: And how is the work experience at a Franksmile Studio different from the dental practice you previously worked at?
Crystal: Quite different actually. The relationships you get to build with the clients makes all the difference at Franksmile. It’s an amazing feeling knowing you are impacting customers’ lives on a daily basis by starting them off on their smile transformation. Not only that, you are a source of information and knowledge for the client and that feels great. Otherwise, the atmosphere in the studio is much more relaxed and exciting, and most importantly, less stiff compared to a dental practice.
Franksmile: How about the customer experience? Is that any different?
Crystal: Absolutely. Clients that visit us in the studio aren’t worried like they are when they go to the dentist’s office. They are excited to be taking the next step in improving their smiles and most come in after considering treatment for several years — so it’s a big and personal step our clients are taking when they come through the door. It's amazing that I get to be the starting point of our clients' future happiness.
Franksmile: We're going to get a bit dorky here: What do you love most about working at Franksmile?
Crystal: [Laughs] Working in one of Franksmile’s studios, dental nurses are given a lot of responsibility and they get to set the tone for the client’s experience — and that I find to be great. If a client has more questions about the scan or treatment we can take the time to walk them through the process and answer their questions. Sometimes things feel a bit rushed in a dental practice and that’s not the case here. Most importantly, the rapport we get to build with the clients is the most exciting part of the job.
Franksmile: Could you give us an example?
Crystal: Sure thing. I recently had a lovely client who thanked me for walking him through the entire journey and getting his scan completed quickly. He’d been looking at treatment options for over five years and finally decided now was the time to kick things off. We connected quite a bit and it was amazing the feeling of the gratitude I felt after he left the studio. This is what I missed working for a dental practice, where it felt very clinical and cold.
Franksmile: OK, Crystal—one last question! What qualities would you say are most important for a dental nurse wanting to take on a similar role at Franksmile?
Crystal: A candidate who is confident, talkative and good at building personal relationships will definitely do well here at Franksmile. These qualities set the foundation for doing a good job and will help build the motivation to succeed in the role at the end of the day.
